Update on my ideas for the phone box

So what I've been thinking is that everyday I would either take a photograph or do a drawing or painting or whatever of the phone box- become nearly obsessed with it. I'd put these up then in the phone box gradually building up more and more. Maybe I'd add in poscards of funny phoneboxes or newspaper clippings to do with phone boxes. This way I feel like I'm adding me to the phonebox while not losing sight of what it is I'm trying to appropriate. Tell me what you think guys....

The first three photographs are from the diana (plastic camera from the 60's that is being re-produced now and has become a bit of a cult camera), I really love them, it's funny though they look a lot better scanned onto the computer than the actual photographs, the scanner seems to pick up the detail. The others are from my SLR and wer taken down by the river in Limerick, I couldn't stop taking pictures that day I really loved the old grey dirty look that was coming from the buildings.

Haven't been on this in ages I'm sorry!

I shall update you now on what I'm at!The photographs above are of spaces I've been looking to appropriate by maybe changing them in some small way.I've moved away from the idea of using flowers though I am still growing some delphinium at home from seed, which apparently represent big hearted and fun, and eventually I will plant them somewhere in Limerick. Anyway I've decided to focus in on the phone box. The size of the space really appeals to me because its so in your face once your in there there's not much room to move. You'd notice a change in there straight away. I like it as well because they are becoming extinct, no one needs a phone box anymore. So what I want to do is really change it's function-how yet I don't know. I've thought of a few ideas which I want to try out I'm just waiting to see now if eircom will give me an old phone box so I can experiment on it!

The summer

Hey I thought I should add something to this before I see tumbleweeds rolling through it..So what have I been doing this summer; mainly nothing much but I have been been learning a bit (subconsciously I think)about the ways and means behind the running of galleries and art councils in Ireland. I do my internship in the butler gallery every friday, which has a great show in there at the mo by David Godbold- look him up he's good, and even though I'm doing these different usually admin. usually kind of boring jobs for them i know I'm slowly learning how the whole set up works and I'm hoping it will all sink in and stick for the long run. For the past week the Kilkenny arts festival was on and I was helping out with kid workshops with the crafts council which was fun!I did a bit of facepainting a lot of registration stuff and then we had some drinkies on the last night of the workshops so some networking was had as well. In terms of art work I haven't done that much. I'm working on that idea with the flowers that I was talking about but I haven't done it yet I'm waiting to get back to limerick to find some really awful places!Anyway thats me for the mo!

New ideas..

I was thinking a bit more about my black squares and thinking they need something, as I was blogging a while ago, I was thinking about countries, ownership etc.then I had one of those nights you know when you can't sleep because your head is buzzing with a million and one ideas and heres what I 've got out of it...First I started thinking about graffiti artists and how when they tag someting they claim ownership of it really, in a way, they put their tag name on it and forever brand it as theirs until someone paints over it, so I thought I should research tags and tagging why they choose that tag name and all that. Then I started thinking about why they tag and graffiti where they do?for some people its just mindless, for others it can be to make an area which is usually run down to look better, to add beauty, colour, art to it....which lead me to what if I chose my areas of ownership for the same reasons, to make a run down place look better. So how would I do that...my idea is to plant a square of flowers surrounded by a little fence so as to protect my area of land. In many cases obviously I couldn't plant it in the ground but I think it would look all the better these plants just sitting on pavement. I know as well they wouldn't last they would be kicked or whatever but that can all be part of the process. Any opinions/suggestions?

Butler gallery

So I've been doing an internship in butler gallery in Kilkenny, its been good I have just been doing mostly invigilating and doing little jobs for the administration who run the gallery ,who are very nice by the way. But they have a really cool show on at the moment by David Beatties who is on the front of Circa at the moment so is hot stuff right now. His work is all about experimentation with random objects and space, like one of his pieces is a big water bottle held up over a hot plate that leaves off a little drip of water every few minutes that evaporates as soon as it hits the plate, I think its called how to make a cloud or something either way its really cool!I am fully recommending this show.

It's been a little while; I've taken a bit of a break since college finished up but I'm going to get back into it now!I've been thinking more about what these countries, these black squares represent what they are about, they're about ownership but if I own them I should be able to control them but I can't, I can put rules on them but how can I enforce them the areas are so small people are in them for no longer than a second when they walk over them. Should I make the areas larger?Should I have a flag?A sign maybe that says 'you are now entering ..............' 'you are now leaving .............' I need a name for my country as well... I want to look into soundscapes a bit more as well, I want to try and do a soundscape in a church. I like the idea that they are all speaking in unison but they have been told what to say, it's all drilled into them its like the opposite of the crowd at the match when they all spoke as one it was all very natural very primal and very loud whereas the church would be quiet. Any suggestions?
