Video project

In college we got given a video project and I based mine on a day in the life of someone who is depressed. I did this using only reflections so as to slightly distort the image and give the feeling that one would be looking through their eyes. Check it out through this link http://www.vimeo.com/8693126 or by clicking on the title of this post.

Thomas Struth

I've loved this artist's work for a while and you can probably see that in my work but I just think his photographs are amazing.

Rut Blees

I really love this artists work. I love its grittiness, the colours- everything and its really the kind of work that I want to do myself.

Some New Photos

These images are a lead on from the artist statement I put up in my last post. They were taken at night on black and white film with a long exposure. I really like the night time atmosphere.

My plan as of this moment..

At the moment I'm doing a bit of a u-turn on my work and completely focussing on photography and I'm really happy that I'm finally doing this; I've been wanting to do it for so long and I'm not really sure why I never did. Fear of not being good enough maybe?I don't know I wish I knew my own mind sometimes! Anywho here is a rough draft of my artists statement.... My aim is to photgraph spaces in a way that creates a narritive. I want to do this in black and white creating this past- present conflict. I want to photograph outdoor spaces uninhabited by people but with traces of people having been present, leaving it to the viewer to decipher the narritive.

Update on studio work!

I had a pretty good progress review last week; It was suggested that I actually make the phone box a gallery for my work, love that idea but obviously have to have some tutorials you know I love my tutorials. When I college is over I'll just wander around begging people for tutorials! O actually must back track a little, I had a tutorial with Peter Morgan before my progress review who liked my photos especially one in particular (which I'll put up soon) and suggested I just focus on my photography looking for spaces which held a narrative within them. I really liked the idea of focusing on photography because I love to do it just for me but I didn't want to give up on the phone box so I'm really happy that they suggested that other idea in my progress review.

Quote from artist Mark Dion

“My idea of art isn’t necessarily something that provides answers or is decorative or affirmative. I like Goya. I enjoy the still-life tradition, and hunting painting, and things toward the dark side that tend to have a more critical function. That’s what I see as the job of contemporary artists: to function as critical foils to dominant culture. My job as an artist isn’t to satisfy the public. That’s not what I do. I don’t necessarily make people happy. I think the job of the artist is to go against the grain of dominant culture, to challenge perception, prejudice, and convention…I think it’s really important that artists have an agitational function in culture. No one else seems to.”

Update on my ideas for the phone box

So what I've been thinking is that everyday I would either take a photograph or do a drawing or painting or whatever of the phone box- become nearly obsessed with it. I'd put these up then in the phone box gradually building up more and more. Maybe I'd add in poscards of funny phoneboxes or newspaper clippings to do with phone boxes. This way I feel like I'm adding me to the phonebox while not losing sight of what it is I'm trying to appropriate. Tell me what you think guys....
